In the Making: Jovencio de la Paz and Katrina Sánchez Standfield

In the Making“Every woven textile is also an instruction on how to make that textile. You can decode a piece of cloth if you look closely… It’s a pattern, a language that can be read on the surface.”
On Thursday, October 20, 2022, we enjoyed a conversation with two fiber artists from each coast, Katrina Sánchez Standfield and Jovencio de la Paz, who explored the wide variance in expression within the craft of weaving and textiles. The conversation touched on finding healing through their work, the balance of digital and hands-on technology, and what instilled a love of textiles in each of them.
Panamanian-American artist Katrina Sánchez Standfield explores ideas of play, community, and healing through paintings, illustrations, and tactile soft sculptures called Magnified Weavings. Influenced by her process of mending fabrics with needle and thread and the vivid natural landscapes of Panama, Katrina’s work studies scale, texture, color, and form, and plays on how we relate to our physical environments, ourselves, and each other.
Researching and creating within the “fraught and fruitful” relationship between ancient weaving technology and modern computers, Jovencio de la Paz creates textile weavings through their shared language of binary code. Using a digital Jacquard loom, they manipulate and fracture design software to explore and test the boundaries of how cloth is typically conceived. Pushing design software to the point of rupture, they capture the physicality of these behaviors as the warp and weft of hand-woven textiles.
