Alexandra Stewart Pugsley CA ’14

I studied architecture and education in college, taught outdoor science in California for a year and then was a nanny in New York City for a few years before I came to NBSS.

I loved studying architecture but it was too theoretical for me, I wanted some hands on experience. I grew up building and repairing my Dad’s farm and I knew I didn’t want a life trapped inside working on computer models. North Bennet Street School was recommended to me and Boston seemed like a great choice.

In addition to NBSS, I took night classes to get a Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, so I was always in school. One day I would like to combine carpentry with therapy and provide a dynamic holistic program to young people to build resiliency and mental fortitude. In the meantime, I cater events all over Boston, try to ride my bike as much as I can and swing a hammer.

For prospective carpentry students, my advice is to be on time, pay extra attention, and be funny. You will get out of the program what you put into it, and although you definitely need to grow a thick skin, some of the most supportive people I have ever met were in my class.
