In the Making: Robotics and Toolmaking
“Anybody who uses a tool is in a constant state of learning about the material that they’re working with, and the experience is changing them as well. So if a robot that’s making something isn’t learning from what it’s doing, it’s completely deficient compared to a human being.”
On Thursday, January 18, 2024, we hosted a fascinating conversation exploring the ways in which human hands and material knowledge tie into robotics in manufacturing, using tools and toolmaking as a focus. The combined expertise of the panel led to a nuanced discussion of both how technology and automation can enhance human-driven artistic and creative processes, and that machines can’t replace the unique ways humans solve problems and use tools with high sensitivity and sophistication, especially skilled tradespeople with physical knowledge of materials and methods.
We were joined by three panelists:
- Julie Shah, H.N. Slater Professor, Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics and director of the Interactive Robotics Group of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at MIT
