Jesse Lane LK ’12

I grew up near Boston and moved to Brooklyn after graduating from Hampshire College, a school in Western Massachusetts that encouraged students to seek out a “hands-on” education and to build professional skills through opportunities in the field where we could continue to learn.

Realizing the most satisfying work I had done during college had been in a course taught by a graduate who ran a custom furniture business, I found a job with a carpenter who was willing to answer my relentless stream of questions, but also to announce firmly “the rest you can’t learn by listening, you have to do something you may mess up!”

Upon returning to Boston, I grew interested in NBSS. Initially, I considered applying to study Preservation Carpentry; at the suggestion of relatives, I became curious about the many possibilities offered by Locksmithing. I really enjoy the side of the field that does not rely on technical skill alone, but in using that expertise in combination with the willingness to listen closely to clients, in order to suggest solutions that work with “human nature” as much as possible.

In my free time I enjoy working in my yard, any project that involves a toolbelt, and expanding my level of skill in electrical work.
