Colin Skofield VM ’05

Before coming to NBSS, I was a student of History, French, and cello at Oberlin College. I applied to the Violin Making & Repair program because I love classical music and working with my hands. This trade turned out to be a perfect combination, and I’ve been very satisfied with my career.

I looked at three violin schools in the US. They all have their merits, but NBSS was my favorite. Attention to detail and a hard work ethic were the greatest benefits of my NBSS education. The group dynamic in the violin workshop inspired me to work harder and dream larger than I had ever thought possible. It’s an amazing experience for the person with creativity and passion.

Since graduating, I have apprenticed in three different shops in New York and Massachusetts. I’m currently employed as a repairman/restorer for Carriage House Violins of Johnson String Instruments, and I continue to make instruments on my own.

I live a simple, but comfortable life thanks to my career training at NBSS. If you want to be self-employed, an NBSS education can teach the skills necessary to start you on that path.
