In the Making

“Making shoes is an incredibly complex process. You have no idea how complex these steps are until you’re deep in it. And it’s tied to labor, to gendered labor. It was a system totally dependent on a range of specialized knowledge sets, and when one aspect fell out or went overseas, the system fell apart.”

On Thursday, December 12, 2024, Sarah Madeleine T. Guerin—artist, bootmaker, and scholar—joined us for a conversation on the craft of shoemaking. She explored the historically significant shoe industry of our region and her specialized artistry in Western bootmaking.

Through Sarah’s unrushed and deliberate process, each stitch and decision gradually builds beautiful, handmade boots that tell a unique story, celebrating this traditional American craft.
