In the Making

The Boston Public Quartet is dedicated to presenting rarely heard and underrepresented composers alongside the traditional canon of classical chamber music in all of Boston’s neighborhoods.

On Thursday, February 25, 2021 we held a virtual concert with Betsy Hinkle and Jason Amos, members of the Boston Public Quartet, live streamed from the historic First Parish Church in Dorchester, Massachusetts. They performed works on violin and viola by living Black composers Adolphus Hailstork and Jessie Montgomery, as well as Mozart and Schubert.

View a video of the full concert above.

Part of the concert was played on a Stradivari model violin made by Violin Making & Repair student Veronica Vaillancourt VM ’21.

The First Parish Church has a special connection to NBSS, as in 2013 Preservation Carpentry students employed their traditional woodworking skills in the restoration of its historic, 17th-century steeple and the building’s windows. Learn more about the significant, award-winning rehabilitation of the church.

“In the Making” is a new public programs series where we connect with a range of new voices, fields, and perspectives. Learn more and view a full list of participants on the series homepage.
